Facial hair grows in directions
Beard hair doesn't fall like head hair — it grows outward from the skin in mapped directions: down the cheeks, fanning at the jaw, swirling at the chin, angling on the mustache. Map those growth directions first and short strokes will follow naturally. It's the same direction-mapping idea as drawing fur.
Step 1 — Establish the face and beard shape
Paint the head and its light/shadow first. Then block the beard shape as a soft mass — its silhouette, where it's dense (chin, jaw) and where it thins (cheeks, edges). The beard sits over the jaw form, so the jaw still has to read underneath.
Step 2 — Shade the beard mass
Treat the beard like any hair mass: core shadow under the jaw and neck, lighter on the chin and cheeks where light hits. A beard is darkest at the neck and where it meets the face. Don't draw hairs yet.
Step 3 — Base hair pass
With a short tapered brush, lay the bulk of the beard in a dark tone, short strokes following growth direction — down on the cheeks, outward at the jaw. Keep strokes short; long strokes read as head hair, not beard.
Step 4 — Build mid and light strokes
Add fewer mid-tone strokes over the lit areas, then a sparse pass of light strands catching the rim of the chin and jaw. Salt-and-pepper or grey beards just push the light pass lighter and add scattered white strands.
Step 5 — The skin transition
The cheek line where beard meets bare skin should be soft and broken, not a hard border. Scatter individual short hairs thinning into the skin, and let a few stray hairs cross the line. This blend is what makes a beard look grown rather than drawn on. See painting realistic skin for the cheek tones underneath.
Drawing stubble
Stubble is dots and tiny dashes, not strokes. Use a textured or fine speckle brush at low opacity over the jaw, denser where a beard would be thickest, fading at the edges. Build it up gradually — a faint grey-blue cast on the jaw plus speckle texture reads as a few days' growth. A scatter brush makes this instant.
Mustaches and styles
- Full beard — dense mass, clear shadow, soft skin line.
- Stubble / 5 o'clock shadow — speckle texture, no real strands, cool cast on the skin.
- Mustache — strokes sweep outward from the center philtrum to each side.
- Goatee — concentrated chin mass with clean shaped edges.
